Northground Dairy
Northground Dairy houses 750 cows. It has been expanding rapidly after recent investment facilities. The herd is fed a single TMR and housed on sand cubicles with some grazing close to the dairy during the summer months. They are milked three times a day on a Westfalia 24 point rotary.

Current targets are to sell 8 million litres of quality milk to a premium market , to achieve long herd life and to create an interesting and enjoyable work place.

Transition cows are fed a De Cab diet for three weeks pre calving.
Quality forage is key to our diet, particular attention is given to chop length, clamping and preparing the complete diet.

Breeding policy
Our business needs the cows to each produce as much quality milk as possible throughout its lifetime. We aim to create an environment so as not to restrict their genetic potential. Our breeding goal at present is for each animal to calve at two years of age, to calve every 365 days and to give in excess of 10,000 litres of quality milk and last for at least five lactations. As our business develops and adapts to a changing industry we are sure our breeding objectives will change. One thing we feel, as commercial milk producers, we will always require a balanced, averaged sized, functionally correct cow that stays healthy and milks out quickly.

No natural service is used other than an Angus who sweeps up a small percentage of maidens and a small amount of embryo transfer has been used.

It is no secret that all great herds of cows are made up of strong female lines. All the cows are registered with Holstein UK and we are developing our best homebred families to help us to identify the most reliable lines. With recent herd expansion over the past five years we have bought in some good families from around the UK and the rest of the world they include:
